Temporary employment often gets quickly dismissed by candidates who are in search of a new position. Yet, these positions are often significant assets to your resume and portfolio! Even though they may be short, they often provide an opportunity to grow experience and sometimes even open up into a chance for a new and permanent position!
For starters, if the position is exactly what you’re looking for, why not consider it?! Just because it’s not permanent, it doesn’t mean it won’t lead you to a permanent position. If you need more experience in a specific field, this is the perfect way to gain it. If this is a new area for you, a temporary position is a way to test the waters and see if it is something you can picture yourself doing. This allows you to essentially “test drive” the job and see if it would be the right fit for you!
Temporary positions can allow you to try various industries and companies. You may work in finance or technology and find a temporary role that will enable you to be more creative and see you enjoy it much more. You could also experience the corporate world versus the agency world. Doing a “trial” of these various factors allows you to understand better exactly what you’re looking for!
If you’re currently out of work while searching for a new role, a temporary position is a great way to maintain an income as your search goes on. This way, you can continue your “real” search while making money and not leaving that awkward gap in between positions.
Although the job may be a temporary position, it can lead to a full-time role. When a temporary job goes well for both the employer and the employee, it can open up new opportunities. The company may be a little hesitant about bringing on someone new and creating a temporary job. It makes a way to see how good of a fit it would be.
